Bug Description

Binary package hint: hplip

Whenn I try to print any document hp-systray shows:

Started a print job.
a few seconds later..
Print job has completed

However the printer doesn't print the document or even shows activity. This happened with two different printers:

hp deskjet d1660
hp deskjet d2660

I already run hp-check and installed these suggested packages:

libcupsimage2-dev
libjpeg62-dev
libsnmp-dev
libusb-dev
python-qt4-dbus
python-dev
libsane-dev
xsane

I also added my user to lp group.

Can you run the following commands in a terminal window:

sudo /etc/init.d/cups stop
sudo rm /var/log/cups/*
sudo rm -rf /var/log/cups/tmp/*
sudo rm /var/cache/cups/*
sudo /etc/init.d/cups start

Does the problem go away by this? If not, please follow the instructions in the section "CUPS error_log" on https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems

"Does the problem go away by this?" No, it didn't.

I attached the Troubleshooting Wizard output from System -> Administration -> Printing -> Help -> Troubleshoot.

I compared the output and is the file /var/log/cups/error_log with additional information.

Nothing wrong in your troubleshooting output. No errors, the data seems to get sent out to the printer correctly.

Forwarding upstream.

Can someone of the HPLIP developers at HP look into this problem?

Mario, there is one thing which you can try:

Install the "hplip-cups" package, then open system-config-printer via "System" -> "Administration" -> "Printing". Right-click on your printer, choose "Properties" in the pop-up menu. In the window coming up then, click the "Change" button for make and model. Do not change manufacturer and model, simply click "Forward" on the page with the manufacturers and on the page with the models change only the driver in the list on the right to the one with "hpcups". Click "Forward" until you reach the last page and then click "Apply". Try to print again. Does it work now?

Thanks for the suggestions but I already tried that and it didn't work, at least nor for documents longer than a page.

If I wanted to print a 5 pages document, with the method you mentioned above, I had to print one page at a time. I thought I should report the problem with ubuntu as is "shipped" not with troubleshooting modifications. It doesn't look good to me, with the default driver, no printing; with modifications, one page at a time.

Should I post /var/log/cups/error_log with the modifications you suggested? Would it be an hplip-cup bug?

I experience the same problem and have tried all the options above as well using DJ D2600 series drivers . You fire a test page, it says job completed - no errors - but zero activity on the printer.

For me it has worked installing the latest HPLIP version form HP page:

http://hplipopensource.com/hplip-web/index.html

I followed the steps and has uninstalled/reinstalled the whole HPLIP. Now my HPDEskjetD2660 works in Lucid (64)

Solution by Jeffrey Abbot [https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/608443/comments/8] worked for me. Printer D2668 prints fine now on lucid (32) after following the process of installing latest HPLIP from the site.

Thanks Jeffrey !
