unable to write to output, fd=1, count=4096: Broken pipe

hplip-3.9.8, compiled using following options
 --disable-foomatic-drv-install
 --disable-foomatic-ppd-install
 --disable-gui-build
 --disable-fax-build
 --disable-dbus-build
 --enable-doc-build
 --enable-hpijs-install
 --enable-scan-build
 --enable-network-build
 --enable-hpcups-install
 --disable-cups-drv-install
 --enable-cups-ppd-install
gcc 3.4.6 on Linux 2.4.21-smp (SuSE 8.1), running CUPS 1.3.11, Printer HP PhotoSmart C 7280, connected via WLAN, printing in general works perfect. But if CUPS gets a print job and Printer is switched on after placing job into queue, hplip driver fails to start printing and creates high CPU load. Full error message found in syslog thousands of times is:
litfass: prnt/hpijs/services.cpp 386: unable to write to output, fd=1, count=4096: Broken pipe
with litfass being the queue name.
Workaround: stop cups printer and restart cups printer, then job is processed correctly.

Any idea how to get rid of that?
Is this a hplip bug or is CUPS the culprit?

Any news here?

Note that the worst side-effect of this is that
those zillions of log messages fill up the harddisk.

Regardless whether or not a syslog service filters out
duplicate log messages, first and foremost the applications
which send log messages to a syslog service must care
not to flood the syslog service with unlimited messages
(regadless if same or different messages) at the same time.
