I had similar non-printing or sometimes unstable printing with my HP 1018.

Nothing helped until reading http://gluek.info/wiki/hardware/hp-laserjet-1018
inspired me to try another (white and cool) USB cable.

It started printing ( I have foo2zjs installed ).
