Bug Description

I have an HP Laserjet Pro MFPM26nw printer-scanner, which I am trying to set up on Ubuntu 18.04.4.  I downloaded and installed hplip 3.20.6.  Now, the printer works, but not the scanner.  If I try to run it, a window pops up telling me to run hp-plugin.  But this also seems to fail. There were a couple of warnings during the install about "hcengine" and "canberra-gtk-module".

I have had the same problem with a couple of recent Linux installs.  Both printer and scanner work fine using my old computer running Ubuntu 14.04.

Here is the hp-check output

rosalinda@rosalinda-PN60-R:~$ hp-check

Note: hp-check can be run in three modes:
1. Compile-time check mode (-c or --compile): Use this mode before compiling the
HPLIP supplied tarball (.tar.gz or .run) to determine if the proper dependencies
are installed to successfully compile HPLIP.
2. Run-time check mode (-r or --run): Use this mode to determine if a distro
supplied package (.deb, .rpm, etc) or an already built HPLIP supplied tarball
has the proper dependencies installed to successfully run.
3. Both compile- and run-time check mode (-b or --both) (Default): This mode
will check both of the above cases (both compile- and run-time dependencies).

Check types:
a. EXTERNALDEP - External Dependencies
b. GENERALDEP - General Dependencies (required both at compile and run time)
c. COMPILEDEP - Compile time Dependencies
d. [All are run-time checks]

Hi ,

Can you please install plugin using sh command:

$sh hplip-3.20.6.plugin.run

Please try this command and try to scan. Please let me know if you face any issue

And also a couple of warnings during the install about "hcengine" and "canberra-gtk-module" does not affect the print and scan functionality.

Changed in hplip:
status: New → In Progress

Shivani,

this bug is one of the cases I mentioned in my last comment at https://bugs.launchpad.net/hplip/+bug/1883898 - 'some devices had plugin=0 set, but they needed a plugin anyway'.

It seems testing of the device wasn't done on clean OS - meaning there was a lingering plugin in OS, which was loaded correctly during testing, but a tester didn't know about it...

Hi, Shivani

Thanks for your reply. However, it does not work. Here is the output

rosalinda@rosalinda-PN60-R:~$ sh hplip-3.20.6.plugin.run
sh: 0: Can't open hplip-3.20.6.plugin.run

I also tried it with sudo. I also tried sh hp-plugin, but same result. I
tried running hp-plugin again without the sh, but it still fails. It says:

Plugin installation failed
error: Python gobject/dbus may be not installed
error: Plug-in install failed.

Do I need to install something? I have tried before, but never could find
the right package.
