Brian, the scanning was carried out from the command line with:

scanimage -v -p -d hpaio:/net/HP_ColorLaserJet_MFP_M278-M281?ip=192.168.178.16 > janscan

Exactly as stated in:

For the scan that worked fine (after moving the plug-in back to the correct location) I used the same command to test scanning.
