Bug Description
Right now, in many places, we rely on the underlying libraries to return useful messages to the end-user. In other places we trample the underlying error message and return our own string which may or may not give enough information to take meaningful action as a developer (let alone an end-user).
What we need is to do a strategic review of ALL places that we display messages to the end user, and make sure we're providing the right level of information, in a human readable form, in all cases.

I'm marking this as completed. The majority of places have been converted to use the new error handling mechanisms, the datatables refactor took care of a lot of the inconsistency as well, and there are separate plans to improve overall message strings for consistency. This bug was too broad to begin with, so it's as close to complete as it's gonna get.
