currency change account don't convert the initial balance

Bug Description

Maxime, Not sure if this is the best way to contact you. Love the product, its does everything I need.

The "maybe" bug is in applying a currency with a different exchange rate to an account. The value of the account in the account window is still the foreign currency value - should it not convert to the US$ amount so that the totals are correct? Maybe I'm missing something.

Clarification - If I assign a split and that transaction occurs on a regular basis it would be great to "assign" the split to the new transaction so you don't have to keep putting each line in every time - again I'm probably missing something.

Suggestion - very minor but I think most people import to existing accounts all the time. It would be easier to make this the default rather that having to "change action" every time. I'm all for fewer button presses!!

Sorry if this is all not applicable. I'm a newbie.

Hey,

1) So you mean you change an account currency and I have forgotten to convert the start balance, I will check, it might !

2) yes, use the templates, and/or scheduled transaction

3) I am rewriting the import and I will take this into consideration for sure
the new import is just a dropdown, but I will try to set a default something or if there is only 1 account to preset it, which at end make sense.

Nop, newbie we were all at a time :D

Hi Maxime,

Thanks for the quick response. So often, requests such as mine disappear
into a black hole never to be heard of again. I'm just delighted to hear
back from you!

I'm an ex quicken user and if you want chapter and verse on why HomeBank is
so much better for what I want to do, let me know.

Understood on my points 2) and 3).
Frankly I'm not sure how currency should function except we have an
exchange rate already in the system so a conversation should take place
somewhere.

If I open an account in a foreign bank with an exchange rate of say 1.5 to
the base currency - in my case the US Dollar, I think the home page that
effectively shows your net worth, assets, liabilities, bank balances etc.
should all be in the base currency. Otherwise it could be misleading. I
open an account with $10,000 US and it shows I have 15,000 but, this is in
a foreign currency, not my base currency.
But somewhere, maybe the account window itself, I want to know the balance
in the foreign currency so I know if I have enough to buy an item in that
country.

Sorry if this is bit simplistic and ill informed, I would simply like to
help make HomeBank an even better product than it all ready is.

Best Regards

Terry Lunn

What about Jeff suggest on https://bugs.launchpad.net/homebank/+bug/1645164 ?

Or I could make an option to show the 'Your accounts' section in the base currency and hover the converted maybe (the opposite of what Jeff suggest)

Or just a switch between native / base currency from the gear menu at the bottom

Download full text (3.2 KiB)

Hi Maxime

I think what Jeff was looking for was a quick "look see" in a number of
other currencies. That's too general I think. I like your idea better.
Hover over the converted base currency account in the home window and show
the total balance in the foreign currency.

I decided to do some research this time rather than shooting from the hip.
I still have a copy of Quicken 2014 (which I don't use any more) so I
checked, and the account window is in the foreign currency - as you would
expect when downloaded from them using qfx e.g. but the amount spent this
month(year etc.like your circle on the right) is converted to the base
currency and if you run a net worth report, foreign currencies are
converted also. So i still like the idea of the net worth list on tbe left
showing all base currencies.
It looks like updating currencies in Quicken is done when everything is
updated stock prices etc. But I like our simpler method better.
Incidentally when i try to update currencies in HomeBank I get an error.

Update online error
Unacceptable TLS Certificate

Is that a problem at my end?

A Quicken user was asking for each foreign transaction to be calculated at
the rate on that day - like they do with stocks so you could compare the
cost of a item last year say compared to its current price. This would mean
keeping a history of exchange rates. Way too complicated I think. I'm a big
fan of KISS, literally !

Terry

Maxime, sorry for the delay in responding.

I think asking if a rate change should be applied would work fine.

Maybe it would help to give an example. Let's say I have a UK bank account
with £10,000 pounds in it (I wish), at todays exchange rate that
represents $ 13,132.20.

On the home page I would like to show the sum of my US bank accounts plus
the $13, 132.2 overseas, so I have a true value of my total liquidity.

In the account itself I should be able to see that the overseas account has
£10,000 so if I add or subtract £s I know what the actual £ value is.

Hope this helps.

Best Regards

At the end I think we went to the wrong path for exchange rate update which exists since 5.1.
Maybe the problem is that the external exchange rate do not cover all currencies and you might then enter the exchnage rate by yourself. See the doc for details.

Hi Maxime,

Sorry for the delay in responding.
I'm not sure how the currency rates are updated. Are you
downloading/updating them from a known source?
I see no problem in giving users the option to enter the exchange rates
manually.

I'm sure you know that's not my issue. I just don't know where it's used.
Where do I see how many Canadian dollars or English pounds I have in an
account and is that amount updated automatically, assuming it's not
manually entered.

Hope this helps.
