No longer hangs under dpkg. I resorted to special casing when DEBCONF_REDIR is present in the environment. I tried forking into the background as early as possible, but there are still several file descriptors open so I thought it unwise to just close everything.
As to why I'm _showing_ the warning in case dnsmasq-base is installed, it's because that's where the binary comes from so it can be run, wether it be from an init script, via network-manager or by the user himself.
Feel free to reword the documentation and warning as you like.
