We've been hitting this error with certain Thunderbird and Firefox .tar.bz2 archives:

If you decompress the .bz2 and scan the resulting .tar file, the scan completes ok.
We're hitting this problem with clamscan 0.97.5. Downgrading to 0.97.4 scans the .tar.bz2 files OK.
