Steve, I tried to change brightness with this solution in a guest session and it worked perfectly.
So what do you mean by "It will also break backlight handling for all other users, so this isn't a
patch that we can include in the archive." ?

+ do you know which date would be deadline for karmic if the package would be stable fast enough ?
