As you may know yourself the workaround described earlier doesn't work on karmic.
But I guess with moebius post #112 we're on the right way.
I've tested this beahviour on my FE31m after removing sony-smartdimmer and reinstalling HAL,
it looks like for me this patch applied the abbility to decrease brightness level, even if it's annoying that it has arround 20 steps until fully dimmed it's working.
but that's only one part of it, @ moebius, did you already try increasing the brightness level, this doesn't work for me with your patch applied in the fdi.
+ Could so else test this on his Vaio which isn't a FE series ? - should be the same line to fix as this looks grafic card independant
