Yeah, I have this exact problem. Would love a patch...even a monkey patch that pointed me towards icons I could replace myself.
My suggestion would be for the buttons to have a red X on them if they are disabled. It needs to be obvious at a mere glance, because people are thinking about what they're writing, and it's very easy to just press enter when finished...
