Thanks for the information. Even with the Facebook authorisation, Gwibber only refreshed successfully a couple of times in the end, and now it is again not refreshing new messages.
Both times this has persisted across restarts of the process, and I don't know therefore that a blocked threadpool could be the explanation: wouldn't the threadpool be re-created on restart?
