I think you've configured this the wrong way around. Looking from https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vnstat it shows "gvostat" being the upstream for "vnstat" and even suggests "A newer version of vnstat is available for packaging: gvostat 10.02.2" which isn't right.
