This bug is also affecting Firewire hard drives, I am down to 18.5kb/sec and can take a very long time. Tried the solution above but alas nothing.

I am ATI X1550 graphics along with Intel Core duo...

I would class this as critical as it means I can not backup the system to an external disk which makes Ubuntu unusable for me!
