well, I can't really comment on the topic, because I didn't dive into the depths of gstreamer/xine for a really long time. But I can say a few words on DVD playback. I really like VLC (Video Lan Client), so I've been using it. It does play DVDs with menu support (IIRC) once vlc and libdvdcss are installed. Also it's a rather slim media-player, so I like it ;-) Although I think, it doesn't integrate as well as gstreamer, so it's not really an option. But probably it could be associated with DVD playing (only)? Just as a temporary solution until gstreamer is complete in that function?
