I also cannot find a font that shows the text-graphics box or the arrows. Nor do my font color choices affect the grub display.
If it matters, during the build/install I was asked what display manager I use, and I chose mdm. My OS is Linux Mint Debian, UP6, with Mate and kernel Linux 3.2.0-4-amd64.
