Whether it's a bug or intentional upstream Ubuntu ships with sub-pixel rendering so the Ubuntu version should ship with a version of gnome-terminal with it enabled. This bug keeps coming back too, it was in Dapper and Edgy if I remember correctly.
I have it with a Gutsy box upgraded to Hardy by the way, so it's not specific to new installs.
