Same here.

Guest: Windows XP Pro (up to date), latest VMWare tools
Host: Ubuntu 11.10
Desktop: Gnome-shell
Video Driver: Nvidia (latest as of now)

Switched to tty1 and top shows all vmware processes running normally with 4 to 5% CPU at most.
