Well, here are my obs:
Yes with GNOME and compiz it s REALLY slower than before. Same kernel, same everything. Just emerged world.
2 things I might add:
it takes for me about 10 seconds now, when before it was instantaneous.
I KNOW I have a mess with compiz, because there were NO nice compiz scripts in order for them to run at my session start: i have no idea of the order of commands in the gnome session manager, and I know the problem is there: conflicts etc
I also add taht I used a ubuntu tuto and script for compiz to work, and I shall delete it at some point because it makes things slower.
I do think ot s a ubunut related problem and a conflict between gnome 2.20 and compiz.
As others said, metacity is just fine.
And as others, I checked everything and no resolv.conf problems nor hosts errors.
So, I wish I could find again that script and that could solve this long time session init.
Please anyone could give me the link to this script? Where it is? I can t remember...

My panel also does something tricky in gnome 2.18: I can t adjust icon size properly: from n pixels it jumps to m pixels without going with a step of 1: it remains locked in n, then jumps directly to the m size and I can t adjust this to the good size.
*I use lila svg icons.
