Another link: a while past the overflow, uwsgi notices a dead worker and restarts it [1]. This means that the uwsgi work that died died midflight, thus an incomplete response and the message "Te proxy server received an invalid\\r\\nresponse from an upstream server"

The thing about content-type is misleading, the tempest lib isn't checking for a valid response before checking for content-type.
