nevermind, rpmbuild does manage to extract it, it's just with commandline tar -zxvf that fails with:

tar -zxvf /home/jnvilo/Desktop/gladex-0.3.4.tar.gz
gzip: stdin: not in gzip format
tar: Child returned status 1
tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
