I downloaded the source tarball and ran the python setup script:

sudo python setup.py install --prefix /usr

As for more info about the system...
2.6.31-14-generic kernel,
Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic 64-bit
Python 2.6.4 (2.6.4-0ubuntu1)
