Failure isn't silent - log window says:

Searching for source [subsheet-foo-bar.sch]
Could not find [subsheet-foo-bar.sch] in any SourceLibrary
Cannot find source [subsheet-foo-bar.sch]

A dialog would be more explicit though.

However, in latest git HEAD, selecting the symbol gives (in the log window):
