Hi Richard!
If you still have this issue with gschem on your system,
it would be very nice if you try lepton-schematic from the Lepton EDA suite [1]: does it behave the same? I cannot reproduce the bug with either geda-gaf and lepton.
BTW, there is an option you can set in geda.conf configuration file [2] to disable docking widgets:

[schematic.gui]
use-docks=false
