I just tried installing Geary 11 and it seems to work fine without the same issue of crashing. I did it via ppa:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:geary-team/releases

My elementary OS would not automatically update to 11 with

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

I had to go into Synaptic Package Manager, select the Geary package and choose Force Version under the package menu item to select version 11.
