Strange. Firefox should be started in English if you set LC_MESSAGES as I suggested. Typo, maybe? ;-)
gedit is another thing. Unlike Firefox gedit recognizes the LANGUAGE env. variable, which overrides both LANG and LC_MESSAGES, so to make gedit be started in English you would need:
env LANGUAGE=en gedit
Yes, if there is a need to track it down, please submit a separate bug.
