This seems to be possible related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/nvidia-graphics-drivers-331/+bug/1210077

I don't know if it's related, since that bug report is from 2013.

What is very possible, though, is that some change nvidia did in their latest version caused something to break.

Unfortunately, there isn't much we can do about their drivers :( You'll have to find a place and report the issue with them or Canonical, or whoever ships that driver.

So this isn't a driver bug as much as things aren't being cleaned up at the right time. Elementary OS is doing this way more often than this bugs indicates. But the code to fix these kinds of bugs for you lies in these bug reports ;)
