Rico suggested we should rather be fixing the global key repeat settings. For me, setting the initial delay to 750ms and the interval to 50ms at least makes the panel not crash when the key is repeated and makes it a lot less likely to accidentally repeat. This is up from the default of 500ms and 30ms respectively.

The dconf keys to overwrite would be:
[org.gnome.desktop.peripherals.keyboard]
