This has nothing to do with the drivers.

I know this, because I have installed Compiz and almost everything is a lot smoother with it. Slingshot, Plank and animations are all smooth and look nice, you get the point. I can confirm that like Paulo Molina said, the Alt tabbing is smooth with Gala. So... the problem lies within Gala, not the drivers.
