Michael - you are right. But there are no alternative to ntpdate. Its functionality didn't move to ntpd (and not moved today yet)
Maksim - you are wrong, cause '-r' flag for grep try to find _IN_ file content not considering file name. And syslog writes ntpdate log w/o application name - it's why you can't find the log such way.
