That`s the problem of relatively old video emulator code for cirrus card in your QEMU. Please do one of following:

- select different card model, vmware or qxl for example
- upgrade your qemu to 1.6+
- downgrade guest kernel to the 3.2(not generally applicable, just for theoretical possibility).

Disabling splash screen will not make card work, though appropriate pull request exists. Closing as invalid.
