oh, and for those who just want to cut and past, based upon what Jeremy said:

sudo chown -R nx /var/lib/nxserver/db/running
sudo chgrp -R nx /var/lib/nxserver/db/running

fixed FreeNX for me, and I am using the "qtnx" client, which does not seem to work with NeatX (had to use nomachine.com's non-open source version)
