Also i think it might help to just run a standard programs updates/upgrades while sticking with the 12.04 LTS. With the Unity interface i usually use the Software Manager to install Synaptic Package Manager and then do all my installs and upgrading from Synaptic. Dunno what came as standard but i tend to add Gimp and a few other things for my work.
It really should all work out of the box. I'm sure Canonical would be very interested to hear that there are problems.
