There's a general problem in the session management, that will only appear under certain conditions (e.g. crashes), I guess, therefore it is so hard to locate.
@Mike Hommey: We're suffering from an issue, that originates from the 17.x/18.x area of Firefox, which is IMHO the most prominent nuisance for _heavy_ (multi desktop) Firefox users over all. This bug, started in 2007, is story telling on its own.
Adapting to new technologies, such as Wayland on the other hand, will always suffer from teething troubles. Please don't mix these. My desktop environment is able to restore a couple of apps just fine, where I rely on session management for ages (e.g. okular and dolphin). This Firefox issue points to an internal session management issue, that will need to be solved there. If it gets to be solved there using proven desktop environment interfaces, chances are good to find a proper way to adopt to new technologies like Wayland.
