This bug seems to have been resolved with the latest libcairo2 (1.8.8-2ubuntu1.1) and/or xserver-xorg-video-intel (2:2.9.0-1ubuntu2.1) packages. Could somebody confirm?
The xserver-xorg-video-intel changelog shows:
* Add 101_uxa_free_scratchpixmapheader.patch. Fixes a problem with
non anti-aliased cairo shapes not being rendered at all on intel
graphics. Cherrypick from upstream 2.9.1 release. (LP: #458545)
