A combo of any position:fixed elements and a bunch of resized images remarkably decreases frame rate. Check out attachment #326909 with Firefox3. Turn smooth scroll on and scroll up and down and see difference on responce between on upper side and on lower side. Upper side is filled with resized images and lower side is filled with raw ones. Our fixed element is only one black dot on upper right.

You may want to say that this is caused by resized images but a position:fixed element. If you can not be sure, comment this little dot out and see the performance turns to all just fine.
