This was a specific decision not to do CONFIG_SMP, unfortunately, as the Finnix x86 (and ppc, fwiw) kernel targets compatibility over features. An SMP-enabled Linux kernel is not compatible with 586 (and certain early 686) processors, and there are no instances where SMP-capable x86 processors require an SMP-capable kernel.
