Bug Description

Binary package hint: file-roller

Intrepid and Jaunty both have a very frustrating bug for Wine users - double clicking a Windows executable causes it to open in File Roller and generate a very cryptic "Null" error report.

In /usr/share/applications/file-roller.desktop, file-roller associates itself with "application/x-ms-dos-executable", which is what causes this behavior.

ProblemType: Bug
Architecture: amd64
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 9.04
NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia
Package: file-roller 2.26.0-0ubuntu2
ProcEnviron:
 PATH=(custom, user)
 LANG=en_US.UTF-8
 SHELL=/bin/bash
SourcePackage: file-roller
Uname: Linux 2.6.28-11-generic x86_64

Oops, sorry, there were two .patch files in that debdiff for some reason - please use this one instead.

Thank, I will wait for upstream comments on the issue though, they probably listed there is because auto-exe zip can be opened by file-roller for example

Can I have an update on this? This is still an issue in Lucid and it's really annoying.

I still don't see any value in opening .exes with file-roller by default when Wine is installed. Is there a way for Wine to take priority now? I understand this wasn't the case in Karmic.

For what it's worth upstream says we should make Wine the default handler as well.

Qouting upstream file-roller developer: "this is done to support self-extracting archives, anyway you can fix this by setting wine as the default handler of .exe files. This is more a distribution bug than a file-roller bug." I agree with Scott Ritchie, that the ms-dos executable associations for file-roller should be removed.

I was going to provide another patch for Natty but it seems when you install Wine now it takes the double click action by default instead.

What troubles me is that I have no idea why, or if this will be true for every user.

Does this same bug result in the Minecraft java (.jar) file being opened with the Archive Manager, instead of OpenJDK, when the .jar file is double left-clicked?

Still a bug in trusty.

Come on, is this gonna be fixed?
