My ATI Radeon 9600 (AGP) freezes already when the display-manager was starting (just after the UBUNTU welcome splash-screen - loading the OS).
I managed to start in recovery mode and turn off the modules (dri and glx) listed in the beginning of this thread and it seems to work again.
