This bug is getting pretty thick with comments. :-)

The title of this bug is a bit general, and I think some of the people reporting here are actually having unrelated issues, that really should be filed as new bugs.

For troubleshooting this problem, ssh into the box from a second machine and run Xorg within gdb; when it freezes, try to get a backtrace. Info on how to do this is at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingXorg. Then please file a NEW bug (don't attach it to this one), along with your Xorg.0.log, Xorg.0.log.old, xorg.conf, and the output of lspci -vvnn.

We'll be focusing only on the original bug reporters' issue in this bug report, so unless you're absolutely sure you have exactly the same issue as him, please file a new report (we can always mark it a dupe later if it proves to be so).
