using the version 6.6 as suggested by _merou stopped the freezes i had. in my case (7000/VE) I even had freezes without any 3d going on. I think it was also freezing when doing Xv. not sure. anyway... going to 6.6 fixed the problem.
I didn't try compiz though.

If others want to try, you can get the file suggested by _merou in this bug, and type this on the file:

sudo dpkg -i <file>
