Same issue - only weirder. Have two machines both recently installed with 10.04. One can handle zlib.1.2.4.tar.gz (from zlib.org) and one cannot. Output sha1sum on the input file, /bin/gzip and its two dependent libraries are identical. Both systems claim to be up to date on packages. Output from strace on both machines compared, nothing notable.
This not an expat issue (we should probably stop bothering them over it ;-)
