I really wish to see EVERYONE with a computer using Ubuntu. I'm scared Unity will see the demise of Ubuntu!

Here's the advantage I can offer here which few others can: I see how computers get used by people who have little knowledge about using computers; such users find it difficult to understand what the rest of us know without thinking.

Here's the secret to win-over new users: assume new users DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY ARE DOING. It's like they have landed on another planet and need to make sense of things. Such users can use a cashpoint/ATM without even knowing what operating system it's running underneath. If the cashpoint/ATM is not running Windows, they have no idea. An interface which the user does not have to “learn” may be the reason why tablet devices like the iPad have become so successful?

When you design a user interface, it must be *fast*. A blazingly fast interface will instantly impress users who are familiar with the slower response times of Microsoft Windows. It also allows programs to run faster, especially when Ubuntu is installed on older computers.

I think it will be at least 10 years before we see a fully “3D” graphical user interface, so let's focus on 2D user interfaces for now and later introduce more advanced and powerful user interfaces on newer computers in the future. Don't allow all the bells and whistles of the user interface to conflict with programs like Flash Player and Wine - a weakness with Unity at the moment. Remember that users are likely to be relying on Wine to run Windows programs which are not available for Ubuntu/Linux.
