Bug Description

Exaile is my favorite music player -- very well balanced. Unfortunately, most of the time in Ubuntu 10.10, I cannot connect to Shoutcast anymore like I could in 10.04. I also cannot find a 10.10 PPA anywhere, at this time. Thanks.

This also affects me, even with Exaile version 0.3.2.0. I am using Ubuntu 10.10 on two machines, one 32 bit, one 64 bit.
Issues are recent, last few weeks, I read some item on Shoutcast API changing, no doubt affecting current settings.
I love Exaile, the Radio features are nice, and I miss them. So I'd consider this urgent.

Since I was using 10.04 , suddenly I was not able to connect to Shoutcast anymore, and now I just installed 10.10 and the problem is still there. Hope it will be back soon.

Thanks.

AFAICT this problem is due to the change of Shoutcast's API (http://www.shoutcastblog.com/2010/09/30/shoutcast-api-update/) that renders the plugin completely unuseful.

I would be more than willing to submit a patch to make the plugin compliant with the new API, but the license necessary to obtain a Shoutcast API Dev Key is incompatible with free software. VLC has had similar problem (with AOL asking to comply to their license) and has decided to remove Shoutcast support (more details here: http://www.videolan.org/press/2010-1.html).

IMHO the only sane thing to do is to discontinue the plugin, at least while Shoutcast doesn't change the license.

Thanks Matteo for the information. Yes, I think they should remove the plugin and perhaps use an alternative radio station source to replace it.

FFS there is no ALTERNATE SOURCE. Icecast sucks ass. Get on board, be a rebel, a hacker, a linux-guy, not a pussy - 'let's remove it'.. bha-bha-bha... there will be a better player made by some cool hacker and Exaile will drag along in 6-9 months "well, maybe we can't change the world like this... by fucking our users over".

@Goldencut: Even beyond the new legal concerns, shoutcast's API has given us grief multiple times over the years. Quite frankly I am tired of dealing with them, and this just puts the final nail in the coffin.

If you really care about shoutcast support, feel free to implement it as an Exaile plugin and distribute it yourself.

Marking WONTFIX and detaching the PPA issue (as it's been requested elsewhere). I've put the shoutcast plugin in our "bad" category, which means it will never get installed by the default makefile.

If anyone has info regarding making the plugin work with some public Icecast directory, we're all ears.

The VLC page says "We are working with Shoutcast to solve the issue as soon as possible." Feel free to alert us when/if this happens.

So, AOL has decided he has the mass to rip a new one to Open Source and sh all over GPL? F 'em. How's the Icecast plugin coming?
