Bug Description

Funny enough, I got this idea from google-docs (although I know they didn't create it... for instance, I believe last.fm uses tags). In google-docs you can add one or more tags to a document. Then later you can organize documents by that flag. Very useful. I think exaile would really benefit from this. Maybe there can be a stock set of tags (like: Heavy metal, Country, Rock n Roll, etc...). But then also have the ability to add your own tags (like: My Favorites, Pump me up songs, Books on tape, etc...). Then for any song in your library you can add one or more tags. Later you can create playlists using the tags. Also, maybe that can be another way of showing your collection; grouped by tag.

This way a user can organize their music any way THEY desire... an amazing concept.

I like this idea too. Would it be possible to persist the tags in the audio file? I'm not sure if that was your original thought but I know I hate spending time cataloging stuff just to then be tied down to the one program (which I know this is a new feature but still, I'd rather not have to keep a backup of my audio db as well as my audio files).

btw: exaile's great :)

This is an old wish, but I'd love to see this feature. If one could sync ones files with last.fm that'd be really awesome (at least download tags from last.fm, uploading isn't that important, i guess). This is one of the few things missing, and I didn't see this in another program - amarok 1.4 has labels, and you can use a (not too stable) plug-in that fetches them from last.fm. Than you can make intelligent playlists with it - never worked that great tough (at least the last.fm fetching - and I think adding own tags to all those songs is quite a pain.)

I just wanted to support the inclusion of this feature in the next version of Exaile or its creation as a plugin. I'd love to be able to tag music with any word and then create playlists automatically based on those tags.

Marking this as duplicate of bug #278845 since that one has a possible solution.

To those who want a plugin that does this, we actually have a plugin introduced in trunk called 'GroupTagger', which has many of the functionalities mentioned in this bug. It stores tags in the 'grouping/category' field in audio files. Try it out and let us know what you think. :)
