Did you set up a gpg key already? Does gpg work from the command line?

Yes, i did. I followed the launchpad instructions for setting up a gpg
key. I try to encrypt a plain text file from the command line and i
think it works.

a temporary workaround for this issue which seems to work for me consists of edit > preferences > mail accounts > "target account" > edit > security > and ticking "always trust keys in my keyring when encrypting"

i think this is an actual bug, i think it should ask if the particular key should be trusted each time if this is not ticked instead of passing "broken pipe"

There is a similar bug upstream: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/evolution/+bug/40326

Does anybody knows in what case exactly that happens when signing a message?

I found the solution; this had been bothering me on one computer, but not the other. To fix:

Edit>Preferences>Mail Accounts>Account Name>Edit>Security>PGP/GPG Key ID

Set this value to null(blank it).

After further tests:
The reason it would not work is that I put the fingerprint not the ID as the presaid value. Entering the OpenPGP key listed at https://launchpad.net/~username, or simply leaving the value blank work well, so I conclude that no bug exists, but misentered information.

Clearly there is a bug, if the user misentered information there has to be a meaningful error message and not "GPG: broken pipe". Furthermore the error message should appear when entering wrong information, i.e. in the Preferences PGP/GPG Key Id dialog and not when trying to send a message.
