Another workaround to add to the suggestions above, this one is for the main window, if you turn off the "switcher" by going to View->Switcher Appearance->Show Buttons then the main window becomes sensibly resizable. I have no idea why turning off five small icons makes such a big difference to the resize behaviour but at least for me it does. With the switcher off, you can still move between the mail/calendar/etc views by using the ctrl+number shortcuts.

I can only attached one file at a time so this message has attached a screen grab showing the main window with the switcher turned on and sized as small as possible, the top of the window is cut off because it doesn't fit the screen even with the panels hidden. Will follow up with a screen grab showing the switcher turned off.
