When it comes to the system where the Linda's example comes from, we have customized the record display adding the 653 field to subject.tt2 template (line 6) as it is the only topical description present in some records. - Kathy, I am not quite sure, what you mean by "I'm not sure the 653 is configured yet as a display field on this system". Is there anything else that should be set when adding the field to subject.tt2 template?
As for the highlighting: The search term in the system are not highlighted because we unfortunately must have switched it off due to bug 1762363.
