This may be a long shot, but I want to rule out one thing. Could you both install either OpenSRF 2.5.2 (newly released) or the branch attached to bug 1717526 and see if that has any effect on this issue? I think there's a slight chance that broken JSON is been passed back because of the issue introduced in 2.5.1 by the branch attached to bug 1709710.

Keeping my fingers crossed, but I'm not confident that this is the problem...
